Japan launches SAF certification scheme
The Japan Accreditation Board said it has begun accreditation of product certification bodies for the ClassNK SCS, a sustainability certification scheme (SCS) for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with approval from International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
ClassNK SCS is a Sustainability Certification Scheme (SCS) developed and operated by ClassNK, a general incorporated foundation, as the scheme owner.
In October 2024, it was recognised by ICAO as the first SCS scheme in Asia.
The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) system introduced by ICAO requires that SAFs used as a means of reducing CO2 emissions in the international aviation sector must be certified by an SCS approved by ICAO.
The launch of this certification programme will enable certification bodies to undergo certification examinations promptly and reliably, and it is expected that certification by accredited certification bodies will facilitate the international business expansion and market entry of SAF manufacturers.
JAB, in its role as accreditor of certification bodies in Japan that comply with this scheme, will implement fair and transparent certification in accordance with international standards.
Going forward, JAB said it will continue to contribute to the operation of international systems by improving the reliability of third-party conformity assessment systems, as well as support the promotion of sustainable aviation fuels and contribute to the realisation of a decarbonised society.
