Australian firm Wagner Sustainable Fuels began operating the country’s first dedicated sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending terminal in south eastern region of Queensland.

The terminal was developed in partnership with Boeing and technology provider FlyORO.

“This is a defining moment for sustainable aviation in Australia and underscores Wagner Sustainable Fuels’ commitment to provide solutions today for the challenges of tomorrow,” said Matt Doyle, CEO Wagner Sustainable Fuels.

“The launch of our Toowoomba Terminal is the start of our plans to deliver decarbonization benefits and meet the aviation sector’s growing demand through flexible, efficient and scalable SAF blending.”

The facility uses FlyORO’s technology equipped with modular design to scale with demand.

Wagner also become first Australian firm to be certified by the Roundtable of Sustainable Biomaterials. RSB operates on a robust accounting process and guarantees chain-of-custody and SAF authenticity.

“Current global regulations permit commercial aircraft to use up to a 50/50 blend of SAF and fossil jet fuel.  This will continue to rise as additional production pathways are certified,” said Dr. Kimberly Camrass, Boeing head of Asia Pacific Sustainability.

Boeing and Wagner announced plans to develop the blending terminal back in April of 2024.
