Norway is planning to implement the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulations not later than 2027, according to media reports attributable to the country’s transport minister.

The Scandinavian country is not formally part of the EU but is part of the European Economic Area (EEA). The country is eyeing to include the regulations in to the EEA and the country’s law.

ReFuelEU mandates use of SAF in flights from January 1, 2025 with gradual ramp up to 70% by 2050.

“The government now wants to implement this as soon as possible,” said Norwegian transport minister Jon-Ivar Nygård.

Norway already had set rules requiring aviation fuel suppliers to blend 0.5pc SAF in 2020. The country’s biofuels mandates align with EU sustainability criteria under the original renewable energy directive (RED) I, as part of EEA agreements.
