Argentina’s YPF plans $400m to build SAF site

Argentinian state oil company YPF board has approved an outlay of $400m as a part of a joint venture to produce sustainable aviation fuel, according to the company filings.
The company said the new venture, called Santa Fe Bio, will run alongside Essential Energy and operate in tandem with the company’s existing San Lorenzo Refinery. The company said the site would be ideal to export SAF into international markets.
The project will also receive investment from Argentina’s Large Investment Incentive Regime, is planned in two phases.
The company will use used cooking oil and crop residues to produce SAF.
Earlier in June, project developer GreenSinnergy signed a memorandum of understanding with clean fuels technology company Axens to explore the development of SAF projects in Argentina and broader Latin America region.
Moreover, earlier in October of 2024, Grupo Bahia Energia also has announced plans to invest $200m in a new bioethanol and SAF plant in Argentina, according to reports.
Located in the coastal city of Bahia Blanca, the facility will initially produce corn-based ethanol before transitioning to the production of 150,000 metric tons per year (MTPA) of corn-based SAF.
