Green project developer GreenSinnergy has signed a memorandum of understanding with clean fuels technology company Axens to explore the development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) projects in Argentina and broader Latin America region.

“This strategic alliance with Axens is a true game changer in our mission to transform the wind of Argentine Patagoina into a new generation of sustainable aviation fuel – a decisive move toward decarbonising one of the most complex and hard-to-abate sectors of the energy transition,” said Carolos Villalba, co-founder of GreenSinnergy.

Though this collaboration, the two firms aim to Axens’ technologies and GreenSinnergy’s project experience to address the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions in the aviation sector.

“We are providing to GreenSinnergy a complete suite of technologies from the capture of CO2 until the production of SAF to remove the technology risk from the equation. We will share our extensive knowledge and experience in project development, gathered from project developed worldwide in the energy transition,” said Frederic Balligrand, vice president renewables, Axens.

Under the agreement, GreenSinnergy will lead the project development efforts, while Axens will serve as the licensor-of-record for key technologies, including CO2 capture, hydrogen purification, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and upgrading of the final kerosene and naphtha.

The partnership will initially focus on and prioritise the development of the Eco-Refinerías del Sur project in Chubut, Argentina and expand to other SAF initiatives throughout Latin America.

Earlier in February, Axens partnered with US firm Gevo to accelerate development and commercialisation of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) using the ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) pathway.
