European Commission on Friday announced that Switzerland is officially on board for ReFuelEU Aviation as of 1 January 2026.

Aviation fuel suppliers at Zurich and Geneva airports will need to ensure a minimum 2% SAF blend, ramping up steadily to 70% by 2050. Airlines will also be subject to the 90% fuel uplift rule, helping to cut unnecessary emissions caused by carrying extra fuel weight.

“By adopting these rules, Switzerland aligns its approach with that of the EU to maintaining a level playing field for airports and airlines, while giving investors the confidence needed to scale up SAF production and clean aviation technologies,” the EU commission said in a statement.

ReFuelEU aviation promotes the increased use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) as the single most powerful tool to decrease aviation CO2 emissions.

Under the rules, EU airports are required to use 2% SAF from 2025 with increase to 70% share of SAF in all EU airports from 2050. There is also a sub-mandate for eSAF starting at 1.2% SAF blend from 2030 reaching 35% by 2050.
