Carbon emissions tracking company NoviqTech announced the signing of an agreement with Viva Energy Australia to support their sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) book-and-claim project.

Viva’s SAF project is part funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). Earlier in February, the company announced that it had secured funding of AU$2.39m from ARENA to establish SAF infrastructure to supply Brisbane Airport.

NoviqTech will support Viva Energy to explore, validate and refine digital approaches to SAF book-and- claim systems, including governance models, certificate lifecycle management, and alignment with emerging sustainability standards.

Under the engagement, NoviqTech and Viva Energy will initiate research on digital SAF accounting systems and blockchain technology and collaborate on digital accounting systems to support reporting of lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions along a SAF supply chain.

The two firms also plan to compare various chain-of-custody models such as mass balance and book and claim to understand the suitability of these along a SAF supply chain and document any barriers for the implementation of such models.

They will also explore digital book-and-claim accounting system based on blockchain technology can support the growth of SAF uptake in Australia, especially at regional airports where physical infrastructure for SAF supply is not yet available.

Under the agreement, NoviqTech will receive approximately AU$45,000, split across three core project phases. Phases include activities for discovery and exploration, requirements mapping under ISCC, configuration and testing/validation of existing functionality of Carbon and Fuel Central, and demonstration and knowledge-sharing activities.
