Japan’s JGPD produces neat SAF from coconut oil
Japan Green Power Development (JGPD) achieved a significant milestone in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production as the company successfully produced 100% biomass-derived SAF (neat SAF) from inedible coconut oil using a novel catalyst.
This breakthrough is a result of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) project “Establishment of a Demonstration Supply Chain Model for Plant-derived SAF Using Low-pressure, Low-hydrogen Consumption Multifunctional Catalyst.”
The project was launched in 2022 with grant funding from the government of Japan.
The produced neat SAF meets the stringent international quality standard ASTM D7566 Annex A2, paving the way for its commercialisation.
The innovative catalyst developed by JGPD is designed to efficiently convert coconut oil into SAF, reducing the need for complex processes and hydrogen consumption, a critical step towards making SAF a viable and cost-effective alternative to traditional jet fuel.
This breakthrough is a major step towards reducing the aviation industry’s carbon footprint and promoting sustainable transportation. As the demand for SAF continues to grow, JGPD’s success could pave the way for the widespread adoption of this renewable fuel.
