A new report by Deloitte India, titled “Green wings: India’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) revolution in the making,” estimates that India could produce 8-10m tonnes of SAF annually by 2040.

This would surpass the country’s domestic demand and position India as a leading SAF exporter. The report also outlines the significant socio-economic benefits of SAF production, including job creation, reduced crude oil import bills, and increased farmer income.

Viral Thakker, Partner and Sustainability and Climate Leader, Deloitte South Asia, emphasised the importance of creating a robust ecosystem for SAF development in India. He highlighted the need for collaboration among technology providers, policymakers, and local communities.

The report identifies agricultural residue as a crucial feedstock for SAF production in India. It also notes the potential of using municipal solid waste (MSW) and used cooking oil (UCO) as alternative feedstocks.

Prashanth Nutula, Partner, Deloitte India, stated that India’s favorable geographical location and cost structures make it a competitive geography in the global aviation fuel market. He emphasized the need for collective interventions from all stakeholders to successfully adopt SAF.

The report recommends establishing a clear demand roadmap, supporting feedstock supply chains, forming multi-stakeholder Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), and providing financial incentives to drive investments in SAF production.

By taking these steps, India can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sustainable aviation globally and driving both environmental and economic impact.
