IAG bags two awards at SAF Investor London
The International Airlines Group (IAG) bagged two awards at the SAF Investor London Conference for its strong commitment towards advancement of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) including investment in projects as well as entering into multiple offtake agreements.
Jonathon Counsell, group head of sustainability accepted the award on behalf of the airline.
IAG was recognized with the Strategic Investment Of The Year award for its pivotal Investment in Wastefront. This crucial investment directly facilitates Wastefront’s ability to commence construction on a groundbreaking SAF project located in Sunderland, UK.
This innovative facility is set to convert waste tyres directly into sustainable aviation fuel, underscoring IAG’s dedication to circular economy principles and diversified feedstock pathways for SAF production.
Further cementing its leadership, IAG also earned the Airline Buyer of the Year award. This recognition highlights the group’s aggressive and widespread procurement strategy, demonstrated by the numerous significant SAF offtake agreements signed over the past 12 months.
Key partners in these agreements include Wastefront, Repsol, Twelve, and Infinium, showcasing IAG’s commitment to securing future SAF supply from a variety of producers and technologies. These agreements build on top of their investments in projects and SAF companies like LanzaJet.
To note, IAG and Microsoft also announced a significant expansion of their partnership, marking the largest and longest Scope 3 SAF agreement to date between an airline and a corporate customer. This extended five-year agreement will see Microsoft co-fund an additional 39,000 tonnes of SAF.
Earlier in March, IAG announced plans to invest up to €200m ($225m) over five years, in high-potential companies including SAF ventures through, IAGi Ventures.
