First Oregon FBO to supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Hillsboro Aviation has become the first FBO in Oregon, US to supply Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), following its partnership with Avfuel Corporation and Neste.
The FBO, based at Portland-Hillsboro Airport, received its first delivery of 8,000 gallons of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel earlier this month.
Ryan McCartney, vice president and chief operating officer, Hillsboro Aviation said: “Our Oregon roots – as a company and as a team – mean we’re passionate about doing what’s right for the environment. It’s a point of real pride for our team to be the first FBO to welcome SAF supply in Oregon.”
The SAF blend is a mixture of 30% SAF and 70% Jet-A fuel. Every truckload is said to cut carbon emissions by 19metric t across its lifecycle. This represents the amount of carbon sequestered by 22.5 acres of temperate forests per year.
Neste produces 100,000t of SAF, with production expected to increase to 1.5m tonnes annually by the end of 2023.
Since launching their strategic partnership in January 2021, Neste and Avfuel have distributed Neste’s MY SAF to nine FBOs on the USA West Coast, including Million Air, Burbank, California and Del Monte Aviation, California.
Keith Sawyer, manager of Alternative Fuels, Avfuel, said: “The team at Portland’s Hillsboro Aviation is passionate about environmental conservation, which made it the perfect first FBO partner to establish SAF supply in the state.”
Neste MY SAF is made from 100% sustainably sourced, renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil. It is a fully-approved drop-in fuel that, once blended with petroleum jet fuel, meets ASTM D-1655 specification for conventional jet fuel and performance standards under all operating conditions.
