HH2E, DHL Group and Sasol have formed a joint venture to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel in east Germany. The project was announced at the National Aviation Conference, Hamburg, and plans for at least 200,000t/year initial production by 2030, with a potential scale up to 500,000t/year.

The eSAF will be produced through the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) pathway with the green hydrogen feedstock being provided by HH2E. Sasol will provide the Fischer-Tropsch technology. The South African energy company also have a joint venture with Danish technology company, Haldor Topsoe, to produce SAF, earlier in 2023.

DHL Group is expected to use a significant amount of the SAF produced. The freight company already has offtake agreements in place with Air bp and Neste. The facility will be located in East Germany with convenient supply to airports, including Leipzig/Halle, a DHL cargo hub. Airbus intends to join the consortium as another fuel off-taker.

The companies will now begin the technical and financial planning for the refinery’s construction.
