Air France to match voluntary SAF contributions during Paris 2024 Olympics

Air France announced that it will match the amount of each customer subscription to the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) while flying in for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The program was made effective from March 13, 2024 and will automatically apply to all bookings for travel between 18 July and 9 September 2024 to destinations in mainland France, as well as French Polynesia.

Air France is the official partner of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympics Games.

The airline said that if a customer makes a contribution of €50, this will be matched by Air France, making a total of €100.

The airline has offered SAF option since 2022, allowing passengers to directly contribute to SAF purchases. 

This initiative aligns with Air France’s ambitious goal of reaching 10% SAF use in global flights by 2030, exceeding European requirements. In 2023, and for the second year running, the Air France-KLM Group was the world’s leading user of sustainable aviation fuel.

Air France has put an ambitious decarbonisation strategy in place, called the Air France Act, in operations, to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 30% over the next six years, compared with 2019.

Under the Act, the airline is aiming to achieve is decarbonisation goals by fleet renewal, using the latest generation of aircraft, the Airbus A350 and A220, reducing fuel consumption by 20 to 25% and reducing noise footprint by more than a third, followed by increased use of SAF and other operational measures to improve efficiency.

In addition, the French airline said that their chosen SAF meets strict sustainability criteria to avoid competition with food production.
