Indonesian state-owned oil and natural gas corporation Pertamina Patra Niaga issued a tender to procure sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the first week of August, reports showed.

The corporation is seeking to purchase 150 kilolitres of (943 barrels) of neat SAF through isotanks or 3,500 kilolitres of blended SAF with a 30% neat SAF.

According to tender documents, the intended SAF delivery location for both cargoes is Bali, Indonesia. The tender closes on June 12 with validity up to June 17.

Moreover, the reports showed that both cargoes must be certified by either the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials or the ISCC Corsia.

The Indonesia government is currently working on a roadmap for SAF adoption in the country. The government is expected to announced the details on the roadmap during the ongoing month.

This plan has a 2025-2030 timeframe and will be regularly assessed and updated.

There have already been discussions about the demand for SAF. Currently, used cooking oil and leftover materials from palm oil production (CPO residue) are the main options being considered as SAF feedstocks. Additionally, research is underway to explore seaweed as a potential source material.

“Based on extensive data, research, and the growing aviation industry, SAF presents the most promising solution” for lowering carbon emissions in air travel, said Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.
