Mana, NORCE, and Equinor team up for SAF plant in Norway

Waste-to-clean fuels company Mana, research institution NORCE, and energy company Equinor have signed an agreement to a waste-to-SAF plant at Mongstad on the western coast of Norway.

“We share a joint vision and bring highly complementary expertise and experience to the table. By fully leveraging the energy potential in non-recyclable waste, we can be a significant part of the solution to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors, like aviation.”

The planned SAF facility will transform non-recyclable waste into clean fuel for the aviation industry.

With the potential to reduce GHG emissions by more than 70% relative to traditional aviation fuel, SAF is widely regarded as the most promising solution to decarbonize aviation.

The EU’s ‘ReFuelEU Aviation’ initiative mandates that jet fuel suppliers blend an increasing share of SAF into the fuel supplied to EU airports from 2025 onwards.

Oslo-based Mana is owned by NG Group and is the country’s first company dedicated to converting non-recyclable waste into clean fuels.

Earlier this year, Gidara Energy said that it has been selected by Aker Solutions as one of the several suppliers to contribute to the feasibility study for the Equinor Mongstad Industrial Transformation (MIT) project to convert solid waste and refuse derived fuel to produce SAF.
