Euglena, Petronas team up for large-scale Algae biofuel production
Japanese algae cultivation firm Euglena Co and Malaysian energy giant Petronas’ subsidiary Petronas Research announced a joint research agreement to develop large-scale production technology for microalgae to further produce biofuels.
This collaboration aims to create a reliable supply chain for biofuel production plants, focusing on microalgae cultivation, collection, oil extraction, and even finding uses for leftover biomass.
The ultimate goal is to provide feedstock for a biofuel plant being built by Euglena, Petronas, and Enilive SpA, with a final investment decision confirmed in July 2024.
The project leverages Euglena’s expertise in microalgae cultivation with Petronas Research’s experience in energy development.
The successful development of this technology could lead to the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and next-generation biodiesel fuel (HVO).
