China launches SAF pilot programme
The National Development and Reform Commission and the Civil Aviation Administration of China launched the country’s pilot programme for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to promote its development and application within the country, according to a report by China Civil Aviation News.
Starting from September 19, 2024, 12 flights operated by Air China, China Eastern Airlines, and China Southern Airlines will be refuelled with SAF at Beijing Daxing, Chengdu Shuangliu, Zhengzhou Xinzheng, and Ningbo Lishe airports.
The programme will involve two phases, focusing on fuel supply, quality monitoring, effect evaluation, and standard development.
Han Jun, deputy director of the Civil Aviation Administration, emphasised the importance of SAF in reducing carbon emissions from aviation activities. He stated that the development of SAF is a strategic means for China to enhance its development potential and win the initiative in the future.
The pilot programme is expected to lay the groundwork for the widespread adoption of SAF in China’s aviation industry.
In addition to the pilot program, China has also made progress in other areas of energy conservation and emission reduction in the aviation sector. This includes reducing the age of its transport fleet, increasing the use of new energy vehicles at airports, and improving energy efficiency in airport operations.
