Sweco to provide engineering services for Norsk e-Fuel SAF site

Finnish engineering and consulting company Sweco announced that it has partnered with Norsk e-Fuel to provide engineering services for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) projects in Finland, supporting the green transition of the transport sector.
“Norsk e-Fuel is an innovative company with a strong plan to produce SAF for the aviation sector. We see that they have the right mindset and needed resources to enter the market, and already the SAF production capacity in Rauma will enable a significant reduction in aviation emissions. The cooperation with Norsk e-Fuel has been effective and seamless, and we’re glad to support them also in the upcoming engineering phases of these projects”, said Tomas Norrena, Hydrogen business lead at Sweco.
After successfully securing 14 hectares of land in the Port of Rauma, Norsk e-Fuel is now in the early stages of developing an e-fuel plant with a potential production capacity of up to 100m liters.
“Our collaboration with Sweco started early on when we were looking to expand into Finland, and it has been very fruitful. Not only have their expertise, in-depth knowledge and dedication proven to be very valuable. We especially appreciate the pragmatic, solution-oriented approach they bring to the development of this new industry. We look forward to working together on Project Rauma and other projects in the future!”, said project manager Martin Straub from Norsk e-Fuel.
The project benefits from Finland’s favorable conditions, including a well-established planning process for electricity access, societal and political support for new energy-intensive industries, and the availability of key feedstocks like biogenic CO2, make it an attractive market for e-fuel production.
Sweco’s involvement in the project will include providing engineering services for the early-phase concept development. This encompasses multidisciplinary engineering tasks, focusing on green hydrogen production and reliable electricity distribution to the sites. Additionally, Sweco will offer permitting services, including tasks related to permitting plans and environmental impact assessments (EIAs) for the planned production sites.
Earlier this year, Norsk e-fuel announced $5m in investment from Norwegian Airlines to scale e-SAF production.
