Ecopetrol begins test production of SAF in Colombia

Ecopetrol has begun test production of 20,000 barrels of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at its Cartagena refinery in Colombia. This initiative is part of the country’s SAF Roadmap and aims to reduce carbon emissions in the aviation sector.
The SAF produced by Ecopetrol includes up to 5% of plant-based raw materials, such as palm oil and used cooking oil. This co-processing represents a significant step forward in the decarbonisation of the aviation industry.
The production of SAF is based on technology and processes developed by the Colombian Institute of Petroleum and Energies for the Transition (ICPET). To ensure sustainable production, national regulation and life cycle certifications are essential.
Ecopetrol’s initiative has the potential to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the aviation industry. SAF can reduce emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels. By adopting this approach, Ecopetrol is not only contributing to mitigating climate change but also positioning itself as a pioneer in renewable energy in Latin America.
The production of SAF can also generate positive economic impacts, including diversification of raw materials, job creation, and improved livelihoods for rural communities.
The implementation of national regulations and the obtaining of life cycle certifications will ensure the sustainability of the project and demonstrate Ecopetrol’s commitment to responsible practices.
In line with the country’s SAF Roadmap, Colombian firm Grupo Bahia Energia has announced plans to invest $200m in a new bioethanol and SAF plant in Argentina, according to reports.
