KazMunayGaz (KMG), Kazakhstan’s national oil and gas company, and Axens, a leading international provider of advanced technologies for refining and petrochemicals, have announced a collaboration to explore the feasibility of producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Kazakhstan.

The agreement, signed during the official visit of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to France, aims to leverage Axens’ expertise in renewable fuel production technologies to support KMG’s ambitious plans for a sustainable energy future.

“KMG is committed to leading the way in SAF production in Kazakhstan, and we are excited to partner with Axens to make this vision a reality,” said Askhat Khassenov, head of KMG. “Axens’ proven track record and innovative technologies will be instrumental in ensuring the success of this project.”

Quentin Debuisschert, CEO of Axens, added, “We are honored to extend our long-standing partnership with KMG to explore the potential of SAF production in Kazakhstan. By combining our expertise with KMG’s strong commitment to sustainability, we can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for aviation.”

The feasibility study, scheduled for 2024-2025, will assess the technical and economic viability of producing SAF in Kazakhstan using Axens’ advanced technologies.

This project builds upon the successful preliminary feasibility study conducted by KMG, KazMunayGaz-Aero, and Air Astana, with the support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

This collaboration between KMG and Axens marks a significant step forward in Kazakhstan’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint and embrace a sustainable energy future.
