Egypt 120K TPA SAF site progresses forward

Egypt recently announced the launch of sustainable aviation fuel company (ESAF) to produce 120,000 tons of SAF annually by transforming locally sourced waste materials, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 400,000 tons per year.

According to media reports, the project will be located in Alexandria Governorate, and will be developed by the country’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The new JV will be led by Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi. During the announcement of the company,Badawi, along with key stakeholders, including Ibrahim Mekki, Chairman of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHE), asserted that: “The establishment of ESAF is consistent with the global battle against climate change, pushing for environmentally friendly solutions as part of our energy transition strategy.”

In addition to SAF, the company will focus on transforming the domestic energy towards greener alternatives.

The project is poised to generate new investment opportunities within the sustainable energy sector, promote the localisation of advanced technologies, and generate economic returns as Egypt diversifies its energy portfolio.

Nearly $530m is expected to be invested in the SAF project with scheduled to begin in the next few years.

Earlier in February, Egypt announced it is planning to build 120K TPA SAF plant.
