Power2X has announced a partnership with Honeywell to implement Honeywell UOP’s eFiningTM methanol-to-jet processing technology in Power2X’s eFuels Rotterdam project – a large-scale production and storage hub for sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) and synthetic, ultra-low carbon fuels in the Port of Rotterdam.

Power2X, in collaboration with Advario, announced a strategic partnership in October of 2024 to develop a production and storage hub for e-SAF and synthetic ultra-low carbon fuels in the Port of Rotterdam. The facility will have the capacity to produce over 250,000 tonnes/year of e-SAF from green hydrogen.

The facility will play a pivotal role in ensuring supply of eSAF to Europe. Europe’s ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation has already mandated the increased use of SAF, including eSAF, from 2030 onwards.

“Accelerating the energy transition requires developing next-generation energy assets at an industrial scale and deploying cutting-edge technology to unlock new value chains, delivering clean energy where it’s most needed,” said Occo Roelofsen, CEO of Power 2X.

“Our collaboration with Honeywell on eFuels Rotterdam marks a significant step forward in producing SAFs in the heart of Europe.”

eFuels combine green hydrogen (i.e., hydrogen produced from renewable energy and water) and carbon dioxide to create eMethanol, which can then be converted into sustainable fuels like eSAF or other synthetic drop-in fuels.

Honeywell’s SAF technologies are licensed at over 50 sites globally, with a projected daily capacity of over 500,000 barrels of renewable fuel per day when fully operational.

Honeywell’s renewable fuels portfolio also includes its EcofiningTM, FT UnicrackingTM  and Ethanol to Jet technologies to help create next-generation fuels.
