SK Energy announced that it has successfully delivered sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Europe just four months after the company began commercial production of the fuel at its Ulsan complex.

The deliveries come just days after the EU mandate kicked off necessitating 2% SAF in aviation fuels.

“We will closely monitor domestic and international SAF policy changes and market demands to expand SAF production and exports,” said Lee Chun-kil, CSO of SK Energy, head of SK Innovation Ulsan Complex. SK Energy plans to expand its domestic supply and continue its growth in the global SAF market.

The refinery began commercial production of SAF in September last year in Ulsan via the co-processing technology integrating bio-based material supply lines into existing petroleum production processes.

The company is focusing on producing SAF and bio-naphtha.

The Ulsan site has a production capacity of approximately 100,000 tons per year for SAF and other low-carbon products.
