Japanese engineering firm IHI and its Singapore-based subsidiary IHI Asia Pacific announced the launch of a small-scale pilot facility to produce to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from hydrogen and CO2.

The facility was developed in partnership with Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (ISCE).

The facility, which will be housed in the ISCE premises, has completed the installation of a small-scale production test device capable of producing 5kg of liquid hydrocarbons per day, with the aim of verifying a series of processes for synthesising liquid hydrocarbons.

“By operating this test equipment, we will optimize the operating conditions of the synthesis plant and obtain reactor data to verify the entire process,” the companies said.

“Going forward, we will work with various partners to accelerate our efforts to build an SAF value chain, aiming to obtain ASTM certification*3 in the late 2020s and commercialize the product around 2030.”
