Operator Budapest Airport announced that it has successfully certified to introduce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the Ferenc Liszt International Airport.

The airport operator, part of the Vinci Airports Network, said the certification was one of the prerequisites to provide airlines with the minimum 2% SAF from 1 January 2025, as required by the EU-wide SAF mandates.

“The availability of sustainable aviation fuel at Budapest Airport is a very important milestone and will greatly contribute to the future reduction of Budapest Airport’s indirect carbon emissions from its corporate value chain activities,” said Francois Berisot, CEO, Budapest Airport.

The airport operator said that it began using SAF in 2023, in cooperation with MOL, Wizz Air and its subsidiary Airport Fuel Supply Ltd to ensure compliance with the EU SAF mandate of 2% coming into force in 2025.

The airline said the increased usage of SAF is one of many steps it has taken to reduce direct airport emissions including energy efficiency, the electrification of vehicles, the development of renewables, etc.
