Japanese energy major Cosmo Oil said it has signed an agreement with Tokyo Metropolitan, JGC Holdings and Revo International to promote the collection of used cooking oil from households.

The agreement builds on partnership between the parties announced in August 2023. The companies will now install dedicated collection boxes for household used cooking oil at 55 Cosmo gas stations in Tokyo from Thursday, July 31.

This initiative aims to turn household used cooking oil into a raw material for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The collected UCO will be supplied to the plant at Cosmo Oil Sakai Refinery of SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY, Japan’s first large-scale SAF producer.

The Tokyo-wide collection initiative will utilise knowledge gained from the citizen collection demonstration project conducted at three service stations in Tokyo since June 2024, as well as citizen collection projects conducted at 11 service stations in Sakai City and five in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture.
