Spanish energy transition company Solarig announced plans to develop power-to-liquid sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Teruel, Spain with an investment of €1.15bn ($1.2bn) expanding its SAF portfolio in Spain to nearly 400,000 tons of annual SAF production.

“This new facility places Teruel at the forefront of sustainable fuel production. It leverages the region’s natural resources, such as sun, wind, and water, as well as biogas and biogenic CO2 from our facilities, derived from agro-livestock waste in the area. This project, supported by national, regional, and local public entities and leading companies in the aviation sector, is part of our Spanish portfolio, which exceeds 400,000 tons of SAF annually,” said Miguel Ángel Calleja, chairman and CEO, Solarig.

The company said that the project, titled Turboleta SAF, will benefit nearby infrastructures, such as the airports of Teruel and Zaragoza, giving them access to locally-produced sustainable fuel.

As part of the project’s financial consolidation, Solarig has submitted ‘Turboleta SAF’ to the “Incentive Program for Renewable Hydrogen Production and Consumption Projects (Clusters or Valleys)” initiative launched by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE), funded through Next Generation EU resources.

Earlier in April this year, Solarig said it will set up a SAF plant with a production capacity of 60,000 tonnes per annum in Parque Empresarial del Medio Ambiente (PEMA), Garray, Spain. The project titled ‘Numantia SAF’ will incorporate fully dedicated renewable assets such as a 370MWp solar photovoltaic plant, a 50MW wind farm, as well as battery storage with a 100MWh capacity.
