Outokumpu, Norsk e-Fuel team up to convert carbon streams into eSAF
Stainless steel manufacturer Outokumpu and e-fuels producer Norsk e-Fuel have teamed up to use carbon monoxide (CO) side streams as a feedstock for production of 80,000-100,000 tons of eSAF annually.
The CO will be provided by Outokumpu released during the ferrochrome production from its stainless steel mill in Koivuluoto, Tornio, Finland.
Norsk e-Fuel will lead the project development to carry out engineering, secure financing and engage future customers for the produced fuels. Responsible for funding the project, Norsk e-Fuel estimates the investment to be approximately €1.2-1.5bn.
“We continuously seek new smart ways to reduce climate emissions across the entire value chain, and our Kemi-Tornio ecosystem provides an excellent platform to further strengthen the circular economy, while delivering financial value to Outokumpu,” said Martti Sassi, president for business area ferrochrome at Outokumpu.
“The partnership with Norsk e-Fuel demonstrates how Outokumpu’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond low-emission stainless steel and ferrochrome production to the utilization of our side streams.”
The two firms said that driven by abundant supply of clean electricity, public support for hydrogen economy development and access to relevant resources, Finland ranks among the best locations in Europe for eSAF production
“Outokumpu’s industrial platform and available side streams, combined with our experience in developing power-to-liquid projects, create a strong foundation for competitive eSAF production in Tornio”, said Lars Bjørn Larsen, CCO at Norsk e-Fuel.
