Australian based, Allied Biofuels, signs a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Uzbekistan Airports to collaborate on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and eSAF production in the country.

The agreement supports Allied Biofuels SAF, eSAF and renewable diesel facility. At full capacity the project is expected to annually produce 160,000 tonnes of SAF, 257,000 tonnes of eSAF and 5,040 tonnes of renewable diesel. Commercial production is expected to begin in 2030.

“This memorandum of understanding is a major milestone for Allied Biofuels and reflects our commitment to supporting Uzbekistan’s transition toward cleaner aviation,” says Alfred Benedict, general director, Allied Biofuels. “We are proud to work with Uzbekistan Airports on a platform that can contribute to the future of sustainable air transport in the region.”

The project is estimated to require $6.1bn in capital investment.

Currently the project has access to 4.45 gigawatts of renewable power, 2.4 gigawatts of electrolysers for green hydrogen production, and 1,600 megawatt-hours of battery energy storage. Plug Power has been identified as the preferred electrolyser technology provider.

The project has so far received backing from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Investment, Industry and Trade as well as the Investment Promotion Agency. The project has already received a presidential decree and a project implementation agreement with Khorezm region government.

“Uzbekistan Airports is pleased to take this important step with Allied Biofuels as we continue to support the modernisation of Uzbekistan’s aviation sector and explore practical pathways for the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels,” says J.O.
