Finnair buys 750 tons of SAF from Neste
Finnair has bought 750 tons of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to reduce the carbon emissions from its flights departing Helsinki Airport, Finland.
The airline aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, and using Neste’s SAF will help cut emissions by 80% over the fuel’s life cycle, according to the company. The SAF is Finnair’s largest purchased batch and equals 800 flights between Helsinki and Stockholm using blended 50% SAF.
“SAF will be one of the most important tools for reducing emissions in the coming years,” said Eveliina Huure, senior vice president, Sustainability, Finnair. “Reducing emissions from flying requires an extensive toolkit and everyone’s effort. While we are increasing the use of SAF, we will also continue to take all others steps from reducing the weight of aircraft to optimising flight routes and increasing fuel efficiency.”
Huure added that the company is involving customers in its emissions reductions, by contributing “a small part of every flight ticket sold” to the cost of the SAF.
Jonathan Wood, vice president, Commercial and Technical Management, Renewable Aviation at Neste said: “Finnair was one of the first airlines using our Neste MY SAF. It is great to see Finnair taking the initiative to voluntarily purchase our SAF as part of their sustainability commitments, and creating awareness among their customers on how to play a role in creating a more sustainable future.”
