Neste and Viva Aerobus have signed a purchase agreement for 1m litres (264,000 gallons) of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). The Neste MY SAF will be blended with conventional jet fuel and used for the Mexican airline’s flights from Los Angeles International Airport to Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterrey in Mexico.

The SAF-powered flights will start in the second half of this year, with each flight using a fuel blend of about 35% SAF.

“We embrace the goal to reduce our carbon footprint, a goal which requires an extensive commitment,” said Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO, Viva Aerobus. “We will also continue to take further steps in adhering to best practices in sustainability such as optimising our fuel efficiency.”

Last June, Viva Aerobus completed its first flight using Neste’s SAF from Los Angeles to Guadalajara. According to airline, the total volume of SAF now purchased will help it to reduce its CO2 emissions by around 2,415 tons, equal to the annual emissions of 537 passenger cars in the US.

Michael Sargeant, vice president Americas, Renewable Aviation, Neste said: “Los Angeles International Airport is an important hub for Viva Aerobus travellers to fly between the US and Mexico and this partnership will make their trips more sustainable.”
