The Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasts US SAF production to reach 30,000 barrels per day in 2024 and cross 50,000bpd mark in 2025 if planned facilities begin production on schedule.

“Production capacity of SAF in the United States could increase from around 2,000bpd to nearly 30,000bpd in 2024 if all announced capacity additions come on line,” said EIA in its in-brief analysis.

The EIA said that it Phillips 66’s Rodeo Renewed project to produce up to about 10,000bpd of SAF beginning this summer and Diamond Green Diesel’s Port Arthur SAF project to produce about 15,000bpd of SAF by the end of the year.

This is a major scale up from the low SAF production at the start of 2024 in the US. The country’s SAF production capacity at the start of the year was only around 2,000bpd, with only two plants capable of producing SAF including World Energy’s site in Paramount, California, and Montana Renewables’ site in Great Falls, Montana.

With the addition of 25,000bpd from both Diamond Green Diesel and Phillips 66 sites, the SAF production is expected to reach 27,000bpd by the end of the year.

The EIA said that it expects output of other biofuels to increase 50% in 2024 primarily due to a sharp increase in SAF production.

Other biofuels includes SAF, renewable heating oil, renewable naphtha, renewable propane, renewable gasoline, and other emerging biofuels.
