Algae can be a major raw material for cheaper biofuel production.

Japanese biofuels developer Euglena announced that it has entered in a partnership with Chinese renewable fuels, chemicals and materials producer EcoCeres to promote and support development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Japan.

The partnership aims combine the technological progress made by both companies to promote the use of SAF and HVO as environmentally friendly alternative fuels in Japan’s aviation and transportation sectors.

EcoCeres is one of the leading renewable fuel suppliers in the global market and is certified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC). Using its proprietary technology, the company currently produces nearly 350,000 tons of SAF and HVO.

The company is currently developing a new SAF and HVO production facility in Malaysia with an annual production capacity of 420,000 tons.

“We are pleased to partner with Euglena Co. on this important initiative to promote the adoption of SAF and HVO in Japan. We hope to not only meet the terms of this letter of intent, but also set new sustainability goals and invite other people and organisations to join us on this journey. Together, we can make great strides toward a more sustainable future for the aviation industry and beyond,” said EcoCeres CEO James Ni.

Meanwhile, Euglena was the first company in Japan to operate a demonstration plant for producing SAF and biodiesel fuels using used cooking oil and Euglena microalgae oil as raw materials. The company is promoting research and development into the large-scale production of microalgae-derived oils.
