Danish aviation industry unites for SAF
A consortium of leading Danish aviation players, including SAS, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Copenhagen Airport, and Aalborg Airport signed an agreement to spearhead the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Denmark.
The partnership’s primary focus is on the Fjord PtX project, a Danish initiative led by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to produce synthetic SAF.
Fjord PtX will produce approximately 90,000 tons of SAF annually – enough to supply the total annual fuel consumption for domestic flights in Denmark.
The plant will operate flexibly, adapting to the volatility of the power production from renewables, and consuming up to 400 MW of electricity at peak power production.
“Our partnership combines expertise to drive shared sustainability goals, tackling the critical challenges of sustainable transformation together. This agreement sets a strong foundation for our project, underscoring our commitment to an urgent transition. The opportunities ahead are simply too valuable to miss,” said Anko van der Werff, President & CEO of SAS.
The airports involved see the project as a key supplier for future e-SAF needs that will be mandated form 2030 onwards under the EU’s Refuel mandate.
“The aviation industry urgently needs sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. To achieve net zero emissions by 2050, it is essential to begin producing new fuels as soon as possible. As Denmark’s largest airport, we are committed to supporting a more climate-friendly aviation sector and look forward to collaborating with our partners on this important initiative,” said Christian Poulsen, CEO of Copenhagen Airports.
The consortium, through their joint efforts, aims to create a ‘sustainability valley’ in Denmark, where renewable energy can be transformed into sustainable fuel, generating green jobs and enhancing energy autonomy.
