Nordic aviation company Norwegian said it has launched Europe’s first commercial route operating on a 40% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blend flying between Aalborg and Copenhagen.

“This marks the start of two years of more sustainable flights from Aalborg Airport and represents an important step in our ambition to help lead the transition toward more sustainable aviation,” the company said in a release.

The SAF for the flights will be provided by Nordic energy transition company St1 Nordic. The refiner operates in Finland, Sweden, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

The flights will begin from Aalborg Lufthavn airport in Aalborg.

AFSN – Aviation Fuelling Services Norway AS – fuel supplier co-owned by Shell and St1 – and DCC & Shell Aviation Denmark – largest fuel distributor in Denmark – will joint work with Norwegian to ensure smooth supply and blending of SAF into the flights.

Norwegian has made significant inroads into securing and utilising SAF into its current as well as future operations. The airline has invested in Norsk e-Fuel – an eSAF developer – to secure future eSAF suppliers.

In addition, the company also has a partnership with Spanish energy firm Moeve to procure SAF supplies to be used in flights from Las Palmas airport in Spain to Nordic countries, primarily Norway and Sweden, as well as Denmark.

Moeve has been supplying SAF to Norwegian since 2024.
