Diamond Green Diesel (DGD) announced that it has successfully completed its first marine shipment of neat SAF (SPK) from Port Arthur, Texas.

DGD is a joint venture partner between Valero Energy Corporation and Darling Ingredients. The JV plans to blend this SPK to supply major US aviation hubs, advancing the adoption of cleaner fuels for the air travel.

“At Darling Ingredients, we are proud to play a key role in this achievement by utilizing our abundant, low-carbon intensity waste fats as the primary feedstock for renewable diesel and SAF production. This aligns with our commitment to circularity and our vision of a more sustainable future,” said the DGD in a statement.

The joint initiative announced 470m gallons per year renewable diesel plant near Valero’s Port Arthur, Texas refinery in January 2023. The plant began operations in late 2022, increasing Diamond Green Diesel’s total production to approximately 1.2bn gallons of renewable diesel.

Upon completion, expected in 2025, the DGD Port Arthur plant will have the capability to upgrade approximately 50% of its current 470m gallon annual production capacity to SAF.

The project’s estimated cost is approximately $315m, with half of that attributable to Darling Ingredients. With the completion of this project, DGD is expected to be one of the largest SAF manufacturers in the world.
