Japan’s Saffaire Sky Energy secures ISCC certification for SAF

Saffaire Sky Energy, a joint venture between Japan’s Cosmo Oil, JGC, and Revo International, said it recently secured the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) CORSA certification for its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced at the Sakai plant, currently under construction.
The company, in its ESG presentation for fiscal year 2024, also added that it has obtained the ISCC EU certificate, confirming its compliance with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED) II. Saffaire Sky Energy plans to produce 30,000 kiloliters of SAF annually, utilising domestically-sourced used cooking oil (UCO).
Commercial production at the Sakai Refinery is slated to commence between April and May 2025 with initial production capacity of 24,000 kiloliters, following the completion of the plant’s construction by the end of 2024.
The joint venture has signed partnerships with various organisations, including the cities of Sakai and Kobe, Keikyu, and Dining Innovation Investment to facilitate collection and processing of UCO.
The company said it is currently expanding partnerships with a wide range of industries, including hotels, restaurants, railroad operators, department stores and local governments to expand UCO collection.
The company said that it has already started UCO storage in feedstock tanks during October of this year and expects SAF production facility to be completed by the end of the year with plans to being SAF production in the last weeks of December.
On the sales front, the company said it plans to deliver SAF to airlines at airports in Japan.
The company said it will be the only supplier of locally-made SAF in FY2025.
