Sustainable fuels developer HIF Global announced that it has entered in a strategic partnership with aerospace developer Airbus to accelerate the development and adoption of e-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF).

The collaboration, formalised through an MoU, will focus on technical advancements, project development, commercial strategies and joint advocacy efforts to promote the use of e-SAF in the aviation sector.

The agreement was signed at the sidelines of the Farnborough Air Show in London.

e-SAF, produced by combining recycled CO2 and green hydrogen, offers a promising solution to reduce aviation’s carbon footprint. HIF Global specialises in e-SAF production through the methanol to jet fuel (MTJ) pathway.

“The International Energy Agency projects that aviation activity will double from 2022 levels by 2030,” said Clara Bowman, chief operating officer, HIF Global. “We are therefore in a global race to supply and scale up sustainable fuels to aviation, the hardest to abate of all the transportation sectors. Collaboration between HIF and Airbus will help accelerate the airline sector’s adoption of e-SAF and facilitate the industry’s transition to net zero.”

This partnership builds on HIF Global’s momentum in sustainable fuels.

In May 2023, the company announced agreements with Johnson Matthey and Honeywell UOP to advance the engineering for its first e-SAF facility in the United States.
