Finnair has announced a new science-based target to reduce its carbon emissions intensity by 34.5% by 2033 through increased use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

“Increasing the use of SAF accounts for over half of the targeted CO2e reduction for Finnair,” said Turkka Kuusisto, Finnair’s CEO.

“However, there are still challenges regarding the availability and affordability of SAF. We need to see rapid progress in the SAF market to support the decarbonization initiatives in the aviation industry.”

While Finnair has aligned its long-term climate ambition with the industry’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the immediate focus is on the next decade and achieving the science-based target. To note, the airline had earlier set the net-zero target for 2045 but has revised its targets in the third quarter of 2024.

Moreover, the airline also acknowledged the role of offsets in its previous long-term target but emphasised the need to prioritise operational emissions reductions, particularly through SAF.
