Domestic SAF supply begins at Haneda Airport
Japanese energy firm JGC Holdings announced that it has begun supplying domestically-produced sustainable aviation fuel to scheduled passenger flights departing from Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport).
The SAF was produced within Japan at a refinery in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, using used cooking oil collected by JGC Holdings in cooperation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as part of the Fry to Fly Project.
The Fry to Fly initiative was jointly launched by JGC Holdings, All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in 2024.
The initiative was used to promote collection of used cooking oil. As part of the project, collection points for household oil were been set up in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building and various municipalities.
Furthermore, in addition to promoting used cooking oil collection, Tokyo has also launched the country’s first “Domestic SAF Utilization Promotion Project,” which subsidises the price difference between domestic and overseas SAF to ensure a stable supply of domestic SAF.
