Japan’s Cosmo OMC to begin SAF supply from 2025 onwards

Japan’s Cosmo Oil Marketing Company announced that it will begin supply of domestically-produced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways from fiscal year 2025.
“We believe it is extremely significant that we will be able to establish a domestic SAF supply chain by starting to supply to domestic airlines. We will continue to support the realisation of a decarbonised society through the use of SAF, including through this initiative,” said Koji Moriyama, president and CEO, Cosmo Oil Marketing.
The move will strengthen the SAF supply chain in Japan. Cosmo Energy Group, third largest refiner by sales in the country, together with JGC Holdings Corporation and Revo International has been working on developing a supply chain from the collection of domestic waste edible oil to the production, transportation, and supply of SAF.
Towards this, the companies set up a joint venture Saffaire Sky Energy in 2022.
Commenting on the development of the supply chain Saffaire Sky Energy representative said that: “Since 2021, with the support of the Japanese government, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, and NEDO, we have been advancing our business with JGC Holdings Corporation, Cosmo Oil, and Revo International, and through activities such as ‘ACT for SKY’ and ‘Fry to Fly,’ we have created a major wave of domestic resource circulation, and we would like to express our gratitude to everyone involved.”
The company recently announced the completion of their SAF production facility (plant) in December last year with the capacity to supply around 30,000 kiloliters of SAF per annum using only domestic waste edible oil as a raw material.
“From fiscal year 2025 onwards, we will establish an SAF supply chain that will cover everything from procurement of the raw material, waste edible oil, to manufacturing and quality control of SAF, and supplying it to airlines, all within Japan. This will be the first such initiative in Japan,” said the company in a statement.
