Alaska Airlines sign SAF offtake agreement with Cosmo Oil
Cosmo Oil Marketing Company said it has signed a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) sales agreement with Alaska Airlines to deliver the green molecules at the Kansai International Airport.
“We have concluded this agreement to purchase SAF from Cosmo to further strengthen our brand. We are very pleased to be able to use SAF, the most effective technology developed in the Kansai area for reducing in-flight emissions, for operations at Kansai International Airport and to partner with Cosmo,” said Ryan Spiess, head of sustainability, Alaska Airlines.
It is the first domestically produced SAF to be mass-produced in Japan. The SAF will be supplied to Alaska Airlines through the Cosmo Energy Group starting in fiscal year 2025.
“We are pleased to be able to contribute to the decarbonisation of Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, both of which have global networks, as well as their customers,” said Naoki Takayama, president and CEO of Cosmo Oil Marketing.
The SAF will be used by the airline on the Osaka-Honolulu route operated daily by Hawaiian Airlines, a subsidiary of Alaska Airlines making it the first time that SAF will be introduced on a Hawaiian Airlines flight.
“Since 2021, we have received support from the Japanese government, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, and NEDO,” said SAFFAIRE SKY ENERGY CEO Takeshi Takada.
The SAF traded under this contract was selected in 2021 as part of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)’s “Establishment of a Supply Chain Model for SAF Production Using Domestic Waste Cooking Oil as a Raw Material” subsidy programme.
