Gevo completes acquisition of Red Trail Energy

Renewable fuels technology developer Gevo announced completion of its acquisition of Red Trail Energy including its ethanol plant, carbon capture and sequestration assets with plans to develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility on the site.

The company announced plans to acquire Red Trail Energy back in September 2024 while the shareholder approval was granted in December of the same year.

Gevo said the Red Trail Energy (including its assets) were purchased for nearly $210m. The assets include an ethanol plant has the capacity to produce 67 MMgy, including 2 MMgy of corn fiber ethanol.

The facility also has the capacity to produce 420 million pounds of animal fed and 18 million pounds of corn oil annually. In addition, the biorefinery sequesters approximately 160,000 metric tons per year of CO2.

With the completion of acquisition, the company said the it will setup a ethanol-to-SAF facility dubbed as Net Zero North. The company said the Net Zero North facility will leverage some of the learnings from the completed for Gevo’s planned Net Zero 1 facility in South Dakota.
